Museums for big kids and small

When you're in Sweden don't wait for a rainy day to take the kids to one of the great children's museums in Stockholm and Gothenburg. Here's a quick guide to some of the best and most entertaining ones, city by city.

Stockholm

Heard of Pippi Longstocking? If you and the children love the children's books of Astrid Lindgren then Junibacken in Stockholm is the place for you. It is located on the gorgeously green island of Djurgården just 10 minutes by bus from the city centre. Or a short boat ride - which is more fun.

Less museum than a tribute to the characters of Astrid Lindgren's and other Scandinavian children's book authors, you and the kids can easily spend a day here. The kids get to meet Pippi Longstocking and visit her house 'Villa Villekulla', as well as meeting Alfie Atkins, the Moomins and many more lovable characters. Don't miss the 'Story Train' from Vimmerby Station that takes you on a journey through Astrid Lindgren's stories.

Highlights also include the children's theatre, bookshop, handicrafts and face-painting. And Junibacken's rather good restaurant that serves traditional Swedish dishes. Anyone for pancakes, fresh cream and jam?

Gothenburg

Universeum in Gothenburg is a blast of a place whether you are a big kid or small. This science/learning centre spreads out across seven floors and seven exhibitions: Conservation projects, Rain Forest, Ocean Zone, Water's way, Dangerous Beauties, Kaleido and Explora. These are not 'oh, doesn't that look interesting' type of exhibitions - at Universeum you get to pat rays (but not the poisonous snakes), you can take part in experiments, climb inside a spaceship and get actively involved in the zones. If you're thinking that your kids will love it here - you're not wrong.

You should put aside at least half a day to see and experience all of Universeum's attractions and it will be time well spent. The living environments at Universeum, The Ocean Zone, the Rainforest and Water's way, are particularly fascinating as you get to see their inhabitants up close and personal.

Universeum is right next to Liseberg amusement park in the centre of Göteborg.
