Keeping the little 'snow-ploughers' happy
Swedes love the great wintry outdoors of 'svenska fjällen' - the Swedish mountains of central and northern Sweden and especially the ski resorts. This is where most Swedish kids learn how to ski, so the resorts are very kid-centric and there are plenty of their own activities to enjoy; for example snow parks, play areas, jumps and 'themed' activities. The bonus for you is that the major resorts have child-minding services and you get more time on the slopes.
The big resorts here are Åre and Sälen. At Åre kids are in their element with five dedicated areas and expert staff to look after your little nippers' needs. Here they can enjoy ski school, treasure hunts, competitions, barbecues and their very own après ski. This is the kind of place that kids would have designed themselves.
Sälen meanwhile, is actually six resorts in one and the most popular with families is Lindvallen with great skiing and activities for kids. At Tandådalen, still in the same resort, there are kids' après ski activities, as well as a 'Viking Adventure' and 'Knatte Ski Cross' cup. Kläppen ski resort in the Sälen Valley is also idea for kids with 'Trolles Ski Paradise', an area with runs, lifts and activities exclusively for infants and children. There are skiing competitions, treasure hunts and fun and games with 'Trolle' and 'Trolla'. But the fun doesn't stop at skiing at Kläppen, you can also enjoy dog-sledding tours, a snow scooter 'safari' and a hot tub in sub-zero temperatures.
Idrefjäll meanwhile splits into three ski areas; north, east and west. All the runs more or less start and finish within striking distance of your accommodation; good to know should one of your toddlers feel the call of nature. Proximity to the fine and safe kids slopes, coupled with Idrefjället's Aske (a reindeer character) -themed activities, including ski-school, gentle runs, child-care, bobsleighs and other fun-filled pursuits makes it a great resort for families.
Note that ski helmets for kids are pretty much obligatory at ski resorts in Sweden. Don't forget the suntan cream either.
