Örebro 2010
The champagne will be popping and the fireworks will be whistling, fizzing and cracking high in the sky over the ramparts of Örebro Castle on 21st August. It is party time in Örebro in 2010 as this fine city celebrates the 200th anniversary of the Swedish parliament session here that made Jean Baptiste Bernadotte, a Frenchman, the crown prince of Sweden.
Get the party started
The big day for the city of Örebro will be August 21st when the Swedish Royal Family, the speaker of the Swedish parliament, the archbishop and other leading figures take part in the official opening of the city’s 2010 celebrations.
But Örebro is pushing the boat out throughout 2010 as it celebrates the 200th anniversary of the Frenchman’s ascension to the Swedish throne with a multitude of events, parties, exhibitions, guided tours and special exhibitions and activities around design and food.
Celebrate with Örebro
In historical and modern terms the year 1810 is incredibly important in Sweden as it brought to an end to 200 years of war for Sweden and signalled the start of a long period of peace. In this year also, a number of vital changes were made to the Swedish constitution, one of them being a law on freedom of expression, that put Sweden on the path to democracy. Well worth celebrating Örebro thinks and the city and its people are gong to put on a corker of a show in and around the city. The three main themes of the celebrations are; peace, freedom and democracy, freedom of the press and freedom of expression and good design and good food. All very good reasons for having a party we think.
You are invited
Örebro is having a party and you are invited. There is a trad jazz festival, a celebration of Sweden’s national day on 6th June and the museums, concert halls, churches and concert spaces in the city will be packed with people and events. There are historical tours and guided walks around the town. In fact there is too much to mention here, so you’ll just have to come to the party and find out for yourself. What with Jean Baptiste Bernadotte being a Frenchman, there is a French twist to many of the events and activities around the celebrations. So if you are French, 2010 is a very good year to visit Örebro.
Not to be missed is an exhibition at the Länsmuseet in the town entitled ‘The peoples wish – the peoples choice’; Bernadotte and Örebro 2010’ about the town of Örebro in 1810, when it was a sleepy backwater and invaded every summer by Swedish parliamentarians and their entourages. Basically the museum recreates what Jean Baptiste Bernadotte would have seen back in 1810. Go there for a glimpse of the Örebro of yesteryear.
Come to Örebro’s party in 2010 to celebrate modern Örebro.
