Never far to a beach

Malmö is the only major city in Northern Europe that boasts its very own downtown beach – and a very fine one at that, having been granted the international ”Blue Flag” award for its fine clear water. It’s the classic Ribersborg beach, 2.5 kilometres long and frequently referred to as ”Scandinavia`s Copacabana”.

On warm summer days, the beach fills up with sun worshippers, mostly families. There is something for everyone at Ribersborg – a nude beach, a dogs’ area as well as bathing facilities for the disabled. The landmark Ribersborg pier, reaching all the way out to the classic cold bath house, is one of several piers for swimmers who don´t want to walk half way to Denmark in the shallow waters.

In recent years, Ribersborg has received stiff competition from the new deep sea bath in the new city district in Västra hamnen. The wooden decks strewn with easy chairs are reminiscent of the Cote d’Azur. Here, the crowd is usually younger and trendier, coming to meet friends and be seen, and to dive bravely from the high piers.

If you want to leave Malmö, there are more fantastic beaches than can be mentioned here, located within an hour of the city. The beautiful beach at classy Skanör Falsterbo, a posh and cozy resort perfect for strolling, is the closest of the many classic beaches, some twenty minutes by car from downtown Malmö. Within 45 minutes you can reach beaches longer and wider than you would ever expect to find on these latitudes, with sand so fine and clean that it squeaks underfoot. Ljunghusen, Stenhammaren, Åhus, Stenshuvud in the famous National Park – the list of amazing Skåne beaches could go on and on.

If golf is your passion, Skåne ranks among Europe´s foremost destinations. There are no less than 70 courses within one hour of downtown Malmö, most of a high quality. In fact, three of them are ranked among Sweden’s top five – Barsebäck, Ljunghusen and Falsterbo. All of these and many others are set in splendid coastal locations.
