Stunning views of Stockholm from SkyView

The Ericsson Globe (or Globen, Swedish for The Globe) is a giant golf-ball shaped arena that dominates the skyline in the southern part of Stockholm. Globen is an indoor sports and entertainment facility whose significance to the city far surpasses its real function, and has become a true landmark since its completion in 1989. One of the pleasures of gazing at Globen is imagining what it must be like to stand on top of it and look out across the city. Imagine no longer, because SkyView has arrived.

SkyView is a brand-new attraction that takes you to the top of Globen, at a height of 130 metres, in a spherical glass gondola attached to rails on the superstructure of the building. The trip takes 20 minutes and there are two gondolas side-by-side, each carrying 16 people. The views from the top are just off the scale: you see all of gorgeous Stockholm in all directions and even views of Stockholm’s glittering archipelago. Oddly enough you can even arrange to have your wedding ceremony on SkyView – that would be one to tell the folks back home.

We can inform the technically minded that Globen has been reinforced with 70 tonnes of steel, airlifted in by helicopter and installed by mountaineers. And the gondolas were built by ski lift builders from the north of Sweden. So you might say that you have them to thank for the fantastic views of Stockholm when you take a trip on SkyView. As well as the fascinating exterior of this building, there are also guided tours of its interior. And a little tip: there is an excellent restaurant.

Getting to SkyView is easy, take the Stockholm Metro straight to ‘Globen’ station. The attraction is just a couple of minutes’ walk away.
